Our vision for Mission
Unity is dedicated to enriching Mission through accessible and engaging public art. We propose integrating art into our urban spaces, creating vibrant connections between residents and their environment. Beneath our diversity of language, food, and cultural practices, we have similar basic needs and desires. The intention of our work is to honour and acknowledge these aspects of ourselves, bringing Missionites closer together as a community.
One of the unifying themes in our work is water. Water is life. It is the thread that connects us to the eternal flow of existence. The same water that is here now is the same water that has always been here and will always be here. Water is sacred. Each of our lives is sacred. Through the symbolism of water we honour all living things. We are honouring the first people of this land, the Leq'a:mel and the Mathexwi. We honour the settlers and the immigrants that have come to call Mission home. We are all here now. We have a responsibility, to look after each other, the water, the land, the animals, the plants, and the sky.
We offer a diverse range of art proposals tailored to various locations and community interests within Mission. Each proposal is designed to be accessible, engaging, and reflective of our city's unique spirit. We invite you to explore them and share your thoughts.
Proposal 1
Our mural concept is to transform this public stairwell into a vibrant space that creates a deeper cohesion within the community. Our theme symbolizes the diverse history of Mission. The animals represent the past, present, and future. The river is the element of life, that connects us all, symbolizing longevity and change. Letters, cherry, blossoms, and dogwood flowers flow along, contributing to the strength, resiliency, and heritage that is the heart beat of this community. All of this can be enjoyed as people climb the stairs, revealing the vital connection that promotes a space of learning and curiosity.
Proposal 2
We are interested in not only beautifying the city of Mission, but additionally providing functional and practical services, like clean water. The sturgeon represents the Le'qa:mel First Nation and their longstanding relationship to the river and this land. Water is vital to all of our lives and ensures our continued existence here. We acknowledge that many people people in Canada do not have access to clean water, especially First Nation communities. We are dedicated to helping ensure water access to everyone, including people without homes.
Proposal 3
On the retaining wall adjacent to the Mission Archives building, we hope to engage a sense of community through three pieces of yellow cedar etched with sturgeon, salmon, and a humpback whale. These pieces will compliment the historical mural on the wall of the building. These wood burnings represent strength, longevity, and resilience of the land, the animals, and the people.
Unity is a public art initiative based in the Fraser Valley committed to enriching our community through innovative and accessible art. We believe art is a powerful tool for connection, reflection, and community building. Our goal is to bring engaging public art to every corner of our city, fostering creativity and a shared sense of place.
